Until you are sure your newborn is gaining weight
appropriately, it may be helpful to use the pages of The Illustrated Nursery
Notebook™ as a simple chart to record daily feedings and to check
off diaper counts. Also, you can make note of what you have been eating
on the Notebook pages if you find baby to be gassy or fussy, often a sign
that something you ate made its way into your breastmilk and baby's tummy.
(Remember: DO NOT make any changes to your diet without speaking first
with your doctor!) Charting will also help you quickly detect any breastfeeding
problems that might require the assistance of a lactation consultant.
It's easier to get help when you have all the facts. Particularly when
exclusively breastfeeding multiples, keeping a breastfeeding diary helps
you not only evaluate your babies' feeding patterns and styles, but it
also helps you stay sane. Whether feeding mutliples or a singleton, keeping
a detailed chart of baby's habits and needs is the first step in getting
to know your new baby!
